Reading the Service Robot Market Beyond the Headline Total

The International Federation of Robotics' service robot reports offer a useful snapshot of applications, but a headline figure does not describe every machine or every business model. The latest release and the preceding executive summary can be read together to understand what the survey reports and what it leaves outside its scope. This guide focuses on professional service robots and the evidence behind category comparisons.

Start with the reporting year and the measured activity

The IFR 2026 service robot release reports almost 250,000 professional service robot shipments in 2025, an increase of 24%. It identifies transportation and logistics as the largest application, with 117,500 units, or 47% of the stated total. These are reported shipments for a particular year, not a count of all robots operating at the end of that year. The release also discusses medical and consumer service robots separately; adding those categories to the professional total would change the question being answered.

A reporter preparing a chart should place the reference year beside every number and record whether a figure describes annual sales, a rental fleet, installed stock or another measure. A reader can then compare like with like instead of treating every mention of robots as one interchangeable measure.

Read the previous survey as its own dataset

The World Robotics 2025 service robots executive summary describes data for 2024. It reports more than 199,000 professional service robots and places transport and logistics first among application groups. Hospitality, professional cleaning, agriculture, and search and rescue or security follow in the stated ranking. For agriculture, the summary reports close to 19,500 units and a decrease of 6% for that survey year.

Those numbers are useful for understanding the composition of the 2024 sample. They should not be presented as a fresh estimate for agriculture in 2025. Nor does a decline in one application prove that every supplier or every country saw the same change. A particular buyer may be evaluating a very different operating environment from the aggregate described in the report.

Do not confuse survey coverage with a complete census

The federation describes a diverse field containing suppliers at different stages of development. Its 2025 executive summary notes that it is aware of hundreds of producers and that the industry includes smaller companies. A survey based on participating suppliers cannot automatically be treated as a complete count of every developer, pilot machine or integration project. Coverage and the definitions used by the survey determine what the published figures can support.

Before drawing a trend line, check whether the report describes any change in coverage, category definitions or reporting methods. Even when two releases use a similar label, an editor should preserve any qualification supplied by the source. If the underlying participating suppliers or classification change, a simple difference between totals can combine real market changes with changes in the sample.

Look beyond the largest category

Transportation and logistics contains many deployments concerned with moving goods and material flows. Hospitality, cleaning and agriculture address different workplaces, users and operating constraints. Their positions in a unit ranking are informative about the reported distribution, but do not establish which category is most profitable or which individual product is suitable for a particular site.

For a follow-up story, specify the application before approaching suppliers: what task does the machine perform, who supervises it, where does it operate and what evidence shows the task can be repeated? Ask whether the reported installation is a demonstration or a continuing service, and whether the supplier can share the dates and conditions that support its description. If a claim cannot be checked, present it as the supplier's statement rather than an established industry outcome.

Keep sales and service arrangements distinct

The 2025 summary also discusses robot-as-a-service fleets, whereas its sales figures describe reported units sold. Those measures serve different questions. A service arrangement can help an operator avoid a large initial purchase, but the commercial terms, uptime responsibilities and renewal conditions still need to be examined. The fleet figure should not be added to annual sales without understanding whether units are counted in both measures.

When comparing two vendors, request a written explanation of what is included in the offering: the robot, installation, software access, maintenance, operating support and the process for returning equipment. Pricing or performance at one deployment should not be assumed to apply to another. The federation's broad overview supplies context, not a substitute for a deployment-specific agreement.

A practical checklist for following the next release

Save the original publication and note its release date, data year, geography, robot category and unit of measurement. Separate quoted changes from your own calculations, retain rounding, and link readers to the source. If a report includes a category without a numerical breakdown in its public release, say that the public release does not supply the missing number instead of filling the gap with an estimate.

Readers who want more context can explore our earlier robotics reporting and browse the news archive. Taken together, these steps make it easier to follow professional service robotics without mistaking a headline for a complete picture of the industry.
